Deer hunting with a bow
Posted On 11/27/2007 10:12:06
This has to be the toughest hunting I have ever attempted. To use a longbow on deer is difficult, to say the least. How did anybody ever kill anything with a bow?! My range is about 25 yards, but in the interest of ethical hunting I will not take a shot outside of 15 yards. As a result, the season is nearly over and I have broken one arrow, lost another and there is still no meat in the freezer. My hat goes off to the men and women who lived out there all those years ago.

Squirrel season takes off.

Saturday was a great day!
Sighted my pistol in with the new red-dot scope..an E-bay special for $12!
My buddy Nik drilled and tapped my old Ruger MKI and mounted the scope for me.
I got her sighted in Saturday morning. Set it for about 15 yards...seems like close range, but the vegetation here is extremely thick right now and you are talking about squirrels...pretty small kill-zone.
So, got it all set for about 15 yards and went straight across the road to my favorite squirrel grounds. Was lucky enough to see three and took two of them home. Dinner is in the freezer!

Yeah I know...YOU KILED A POOR DEFENSELESS LITTLE SQUIRREL?
Yes, I did. Yes, I eat them. Yes, they taste great and are by far my favorite meat.
Mother Earth gives us these creatures and we are expected to make use of them...show them respect..hunt them responsibly...make clean/quick/humane kills.
I do say a prayer of thanks to the Great Spirit for each gift received...and include a thank you to the animal itself.

Fall will soon be upon us.

Fall is fast approaching here in Iowa. Soon it will be squirrel season (Mmmmmmmm..tree rat is my favorite) then deer season (archery) shortly there after.
This year I have made a couple decisions. For one, I will hunt in primitive dress (breech-clout, leggins, linen shirt) whenever possible...especially when using my new longbow for deer. Secondly, I will be hunting for deer (during black-podwer and shotgun seasons) with a fine Hawkens .50 cal. that belonged to a friend who is now gone from this world.
Now dont get me wrong...there will still be days when camoflauge and the .22 mag. are used, but they will be fewer then in past years.
Also, primitive camping will be employed as often as reasonable. A small diamond fly and limited rations will suffice on these occasions.
The plan is to spend more time with mother Earth and less with "civilization."
The results of these excusions will of course be shared here in photographs and blogs.
Now, go outside and be thankful for all she has given you.
