Richmond, Albany host calls fo

Volunteer events are scheduled in two localities in keeping with the call for a national day of service for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Volunteers will be on the portion of the Richmond Greenway at Sixth Street near Ohio Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday for "healthful urban agricultural activities," food, music, art and more. To learn more, call Doria Robinson at 510-778-5886 or , or Amahra Hicks at 510-758-4212.

The Friends of Albany Hill also will host a day of service event from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, when volunteers will remove French broom, ivy and other non-native vegetation to create a more hospitable wildlife habitat. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and work gloves and can bring loppers or clippers. Some of the work will be on steep slopes. Details: or 510-528- 3236.

And the city of Albany is marking the holiday with its second annual Commit to Serve Expo
embroidered patches from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave. Participants can commit to serve that day or during the coming year by signing up on the pledge board at the center. The expo will have resources, contacts and ideas to assist in making a pledge. Last year's event generated 250 pledges of service, 500 coats and more than 1,000 pounds of food. Details: or 524-9283.
